GCC confirms complete support for Doha 2020 Olympic Games bid
Doha bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has received complete support from the leaders of Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. This was confirmed during the 32nd session of the Supreme Council for GCC.
During a communiqué issued following the 32nd session of the GCC Supreme Council, the leaders of all the six GCC member states confirmed their support to Qatar’s hosting the 2020 Olympic Games, and said that they would extend all their potential to make this important sporting event a success.
The CEO of Doha 2020, Noora Al Mannai, said that Doha 2020 is a bid, not just meant for Qatar, but the entire Middle East. The fact that the entire GCC is backing Qatar, is a vital indication of the support that Doha receives from across the region.
He further said that once the Games have been brought into the region, for the first time, its impact on development of sports, particularly for participation among women, will be huge. Doha 2020 will offer wonderful legacies for Olympic sport throughout the Middle East, and is the right opportunity for the Olympic Movement to make a difference at this important moment in the history of the region.
"We are proud to have received this support from the GCC, just after receiving the backing of all National Olympic Committees represented at the 2011 Arab Games. This will be a major boost to Doha 2020 campaign," he said.
