Work on Doha Metro project to be completed on fast track basis
Work on Doha Metro project will be accelerated owing to Qatar’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics, said an executive at the company monitoring the $40bn Rail Network in Qatar.
The Phase 1A of the Doha Metro is likely to be ready by 2019, in time for the Olympics, if Qatar is successful in its bid, said Deputy Chief Executive of Qatar Railways, Geoff Mee. The Phase 1B of the project will be ready by 2022, in time for Soccer World Cup, for which, Qatar will be the host, he pointed out.
Mee agreed that this project will have to be pushed ahead very very quickly.
A senior executive at Qatar Railways Company (QRail), the operator of the planned rail network in Qatar, said that the company, late last year, will tender the first contracts on Doha Metro in early 2012.
Qatar is investing tens of billions of dollars on infrastructure projects over the coming few years, as it gears up to host the world’s most watched sporting event. A $40bn national integrated rail network, together, with new $11bn airport, and $5.5bn deep water seaport has been planned.
Contracts for Musheireb and Education City, two of metro’s biggest stations, will be worth around $1bn each, the Qatar Railways Deputy CEO, said.
