Work on Qatar Rail to begin by year-end

The bidding process for the Qatar Rail project will begin any time soon, with the excavation work of tunnels for the underground rail lines likely to begin by end of this year, a senior official of Qatar Rail said.

The construction work for Qatar Rail project will begin by end of 2013. During the peak construction period, more than 20,000 workers will work daily until 2016, said Ahmed Nassar Al Kowsi, Logistic Director of Qatar Rail.

According to Al Kowsi, over the next decade, Qatar will announce about 500 projects pertaining to infrastructure development, such as roads, railways, electricity, stadiums, hotels and others.

Majority of these projects would be coming in from Kahramaa, Ashghal, Qatar Rail, and Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee. The projects will create high demand for construction-related materials such as cement, steel and others. Qatar Rail will require about eight billion tonnes of steel to complete the project.

Qatar plans to build four rail lines namely Red-North, Red-South, Green and Gold spread across the country. Major part of these lines will run underground. Contracts for excavation of tunnels are likely to be awarded to four companies soon.
