First phase of Barwa Labour City to be ready this summer

The first phase of Barwas upcoming Labour City in Industrial Area will be ready this summer, a senior official revealed.


More than 75 percent of work for Phase One of the project, named ‘Barwa Al Baraha’, located next to West End Park, is already complete, and the houses will receive their first occupants by third quarter of this year, said Abdullah al Subai, Chief Executive Officer of Barwa.


The facility, with capacity to accommodate more than 22,000 labourers in the first phase, also has a huge truck parking facility. The truck parking facility is secure and guarded round-the-clock. Other basic amenities like lighting, toilets and fuel station has been opened to serve heavy vehicles and equipment.


The Barwa Al Baraha project was originally designed to accommodate 53,000 labourers and other bachelor workers. The labour accommodation constitutes 64 four-storey buildings, with each floor having 130 rooms.


The city is divided into four complexes and there are 16 buildings in each complex, with other basic facilities and greeneries. Spreading over 445,872 sqm, the city is the biggest of its kind in GCC region and meets with international standards.


The facilities include eight dining halls, menus catering to workers from various countries, a common laundry, commercial outlets for workers and public, 48 shops, Mosques, football grounds, volleyball and basketball courts.


The homes for other single workers comprise 16 buildings with total capacity of 10,000 people. Each building has three stories with 97 rooms each, apart from dining halls and playgrounds.


The city will house a second-hand car showroom, a public auction ground and vehicle spares shop. There will also be workshop for truck maintenance, heavy vehicles and industrial equipment, apart from huge multi-purpose warehouse, supermarket, shopping centre and other commercial outlets. There will also be a health centre, with emergency unit to offer medical care to inhabitants.
