Demolition works to pave way for construction of New Doha Zoo

Demolition of buildings and other facilities located within the boundaries of the New Doha Zoo will begin any time soon. The animals would be shifted to a temporary facility in Rawdhet Al Faras during construction.

The new Zoo will be seven times the size of the current one. The Public Works Authority, Ashghal has already awarded two contracts worth a total of QR118mn for preparatory works, and the new Doha Zoo is likely to be opened to public towards end of 2017.

The enabling and demolition works contract, worth more than QR45mn has been awarded to Aswan Trading and Contracting Company.

Site preparation works began early this month, and the contract includes demolition of buildings and facilities located within the boundaries of New Doha Zoo site. Works estimated to take about 14 months will prepare the site for main construction and ensure the protection and maintenance of trees and natural environment on site during excavation work. The second contract, is worth more than QR73mn for design and construction of temporary housing facility for animals at ‘Rawdhet Al Faras’, and has been awarded to Medgulf Construction Company.

The one=year contract includes design, implementation of the temporary facility, while animals are housed until they are able to return to new zoo. The facility also includes accommodation for caretakers and veterinary clinic.

Ashghal launched the final concept master-plan for the New Doha Zoo project, which will be a world-class destination offering unique zoological experience for visitors. Spanning more than 75 hectares, the new zoo will boast a drive-through Safari, displaying plants and animals from around the world in an environment set to reflect natural habitats of African savannah, an Asian jungle and a South American rainforest.

Among the facilities are hotels, a unique land bridge to allow animals to roam to the adjacent Aspire Park, an educational and conservation discovery centre, multiple entertainment and food and beverage outlets.

The concept design of the New Doha Zoo has been completed by American architects and specialist zoo design consultants HHCP+PJA, and KEO International Consultants will also work as the design and construction supervision consultant.
