2016 World Cycling Championship in Qatar

More than 1000 cyclists from 75 countries are competing for the coveted rainbow jersey, during a competition in Qatar this October.

The 'UCI Road World Championship' will be held from 9th to 16th October this year, and this is the first time in 95-year history, that the championship is being held in an Arab country.

The week-long competition features about a dozen events, including time trials, road races, team time trials in junior, under-23, and elite categories for men and women. It will be across some of the countryís major landmarks including Aspire Zone, Pearl Qatar and Education City. Roads would be shut during the event, on approval from authorities.

The elite menís road race on October 16th is thought to be one of the highlights of the event. The gruelling 257.5kms route begins at Khalifa International Stadium in the Aspire Zone and completes near the Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel on the Pearl.

Meanwhile, the womenís elite road race would be held on 15th October and will take a shorter route of 134.5kms, starting from Education City and heads through the northern districts of Doha and finishes seven laps on the Pearl.

The starting line for menís and womenís team trials is due for 9th October, and will be at the Lusail Sport Complex. This 40km route will wind south and finish one lap of the Pearl.

Organized by the world cycling body, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the championships are held annually, late in summer. The cyclists in this event compete in national teams for the team time trial. The winners of the senior individual time trials and road races become world champion. They are entitled to wear the rainbow jersey during the following year.
