Largest mall officially unveiled to public

The rapidly growing retail sector in Qatar has received a major boost as the Dh.6.5bn Doha Festival City (DHFC), which also houses the largest mall in Qatar, has officially been unveiled to public yesterday.

Thousands thronged DHFC to shop, dine and roam around in what is considered to be the largest entertainment, retail and hospitality destination in the country.

Managed and operated by Al Futtaim, the mixed-use development will soon open in phases, with a total of 540 retail outlets spread across 244,000 sqm of gross leasable area. The first Ikea store in Qatar was unveiled in March 2013, as the first phase of DHFC. The sheer scale and size of DHFC is one of its unique aspect, and it is one of the largest malls in Qatar and in the whole of Middle East region.

Pointing to the unique aspects of DHFC, the CEO Kareem Shamma said that DHFC offers several ‘firsts’, as it brings to Qatar market Ikea, indoor snow park Snow Dunes, Angry Bird World, ‘edutainment’ park, Juniverse and digital experience Virtuocity.

Shamma said that we are bringing unique experiences to Qatar, and are opening the retail part of the mall, and also open a whole series of theme parks, in the coming months. He emphasized that such offering will significantly contribute to the tourism sector in Qatar, and will place the country on the map in terms of retail and entertainment, in a manner not seen anywhere in the Gulf region.

According to DHFC General Manager, Trevor Hill, several new concept and ‘first-to-market’ stores have been opened so far. The four theme parks would be opened by end of summer, apart from the 3km track which has been designed for use of fitness enthusiasts. Termed as ‘smart mall’, the DHFC combines digital wayfinding, smart car parking and free high-speed WiFi to its vast digital media network.

The Marks & Spencer has also opened its biggest store in Qatar, and its world-renowned chilled food, M&S Café, for the first time at DHFC.
In the coming weeks, visitors can enjoy brands including the first VOX Cinemas in Qatar and world’s largest Monoprix Hypermarket, among others.

After prolonged anticipation, the world-class destination now welcomes public, and is already receiving a positive feedback, Hill said.
