Largest official shopping festival Shop Qatar opens doors

The Minister of Economy and Commerce, HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohamed al-Thani launched the second edition of Shop Qatar, the country’s official shopping festival, in a dazzling event.

The opening ceremony included a series of cultural performances and entertainment shows, and involved participation of several foreign diplomats, government officials, and other VIPs.

The event also coincides with a series of shows in malls across Qatar, which marks the beginning of the month-long festival, organized by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA). The event is a celebration of the country’s diverse retail offerings, against a backdrop of colourful cultural activities.

Held under the theme ‘A Brand New Tradition’, ‘Shop Qatar 2018’, is considered as Qatar’s biggest shopping festival, which will run until 7th February, offering visitors discounts of all popular brands, cars and cash prizes worth upto QR4mn, apart from a series of fashion and entertainment events.

The first edition of Shop Qatar was held last year, under the wise leadership and support and directives of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, contributed an estimated QR1.06bn to local economy, the QTA said in its statement.

The Shop Qatar festival is a reflection of government’s support for the tourism sector as an important element in Qatar’s sustainable development in pursuit of Qatar National Vision 2030, said QTA Acting Chairman, Hassan al-Ibrahim.

Shop Qatar 2018 involves participation of 13 malls, covering a stretch of 1,000,000sqm of retail space. The retail outlets across Qatar will offer special discounts of upto 50 percent on a range of consumer goods, including electronics, clothes, cosmetics and accessories for men, women and children.

The participating malls include AlKhor Mall, City Center Mall, Doha Festival City, Gulf Mall, Hyatt Plaza, Lagoona Mall, Landmark Mall, Mall of Qatar, Tawar Mall, The Gate Mall, Villaggio, Ezdan Mall and Dar Al Salam Mall.

Shop Qatar 2018 is also a celebration of cultures from across the world with themes like Arabian Week, International Week, and Bollywood Week, encouraging mall-goers to continue to discover something new every week during the festival.

Every week, there will be themed musical events organized by members of local private sector. The first week, namely, ‘Arabian Week’, will run until 13th January, and will feature a range of events involving fashion, music and design from across the Arab World. The second week is the ‘Bollywood Week’, to be held from 14th January to 20th January, and Bollywood lovers are in for a treat during the festival. It will be a feast of the Indian subcontinent’s vibrant culture and arts. A dazzling display of saris and lehenga dresses are expected at the Bollywood Fashion Show, to be held on 17th January 7pm.

The QTA and its associates have ensured that Shop Qatar 2018 offers a rich range of live performances and unlimited family entertainment in a safe environment that reflects the local culture and heritage.  In support of local entrepreneurs, Shop Qatar organizers have set up 30 pop-up shops in Mall of Qatar, wherein small businesses can showcase their products and benefit from the high footfall generated by the festival.

Further, shoppers who spend QR200 or more can participated in a weekly raffle draw and stand a chance to win BMW cars and cash prizes worth upto QR4mn. The draws will be held on first three Thursdays of the festival. The final draw will be held on 8th February at the closing ceremony.
