Hamad International Airport welcomes more than 120mn passengers

Hamad International Airport (HIA) has welcomed about 120million passengers till until last year, since it began operations on 27th May 2014, it was announced.
In the year 2017, cargo recorded an increase of 14.52% with a total of 1.9mn tonnes in handling.

As per a statement, HIA successfully recovered its passenger numbers with an average monthly increase of 3.75% during the second half of the year, after the initial drop recorded until June 2017 due to restrictions imposed in the country, a statement said.

HIA has been ranked as second best in the most punctual major airports category, scoring 85.41% for timely performance, according to aviation analysts OAG’s 2017 Punctuality Report.

The airport’s resilience is due to its new strategic partnerships and its combined effort from the airport. Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism Authority have worked together to encourage and promote tourism and travel in Qatar.

HIA has welcomed several new airlines that began operations in Qatar in 2017. It has maintained a strong growth strategy, managed by a talented team, committed to provide the best travel experience, apart from joining forces with world-class airline. Its geographical location at crossroads of the Eastern and Western part of the world, gives HIA a competitive advantage, said Badr Mohamed al-Meer, Chief Operating Officer Engineer.

Since its opening in 2014, HIA has been successful on multiple fronts. The overall achievements are unmatched by another airport in the region, as the airport continues to be one of the fastest growing hubs in the world.

HIA is also part of the SITA club, composed of 400 members of the global air transport industry. During the year 2017, HIA was rewarded for its environmental protection strategy, as it successfully achieved level 3 of ‘Optimization’ status in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme.
Currently, HIA is also preparing the launch of a major new art piece by KAWS during first quarter of this year, and is working towards new global partnerships to build on best-in-class passenger experience.

HIA is currently a candidate for the ‘Best Airport in the World’ award by Skytrax, which is classified as a five-star airport in 2017, making it one among five other airports in the world to achieve this prestigious status.  Early this year, it was also ranked as the sixth best airport in the world by the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards, moving up by four places from 2016.
