Exit visa system to be scrapped soon

The controversial exit visa system in Qatar which requires workers to obtain employer's permission to leave the country may soon be scrapped, following a deal that may be signed to this effect by Qatar, say labour experts.

The landmark deal is likely to happen, with the International Labour Organization having opened an office in Doha as part of agreement under which the United Nations Agency will monitor wholesale labour reform by the 2022 World Cup host.

The final details of the exit visa are in the process of getting finalized, and the deal may be signed within two weeks, said Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation.

Various other sources have confirmed that the deal would be announced soon.
The exit visa system in Qatar has been a topic of debate by critics of labour practices in Qatar, and it has been considered a prime example of the exploitation of its vast migrants by the State.

Now, Qatar after having won the right to host the World Cup, has pledged to reform the system.
