New airport in Qatar to be ready by 2010
New airport, the New Doha International Airport (NDIA), worth $9bn, which is currently under construction, will open for traffic by 2010, the Head of Civil Aviation Authority in the country, said.
The cost gone up to $9bn (from $5bn), and the airport will be ready by 2010. Speaking on the sidelines of a conference regarding expansion of Middle East airports hosted by authority, Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi said, the high cost was due to global inflation, and also because the three phases of development of the airport has been merged into one.
According to Nuaimi, the airport will handle about 24 million passengers per year and when it opens in 2010, the airport will also have a cargo terminal with a capacity to handle 750,000 tonnes of cargo a year.
Currently, the land reclamation for the New Doha International Airport has been complete, and the new airport will have more than 30,000 square meters of space for food, beverage and retail outlets, apart from 45000 square meters of lounge space with two hotels. The airport will also have a public mosque and car parking space for 4000 vehicles.
