New home for British Embassy in Doha

The British Embassy in Doha has moved to a new state-of-the-art building in the new Diplomatic Area of West Bay, where an official launch is likely to happen towards end of next month.

The new facility marks an important chapter in the long history of British mission in Qatar, said Roddy Drummond, Charge D’Affaires and Head of Mission, while unveiling the facilities to the local media.

“The embassy had been functioning at the old building for the past 45 years and it was too small to meet all the requirements. The British community in Qatar is growing at a rapid pace and we need larger facility. At present, ours is the first mission to open in the New Diplomatic Area of Doha,” said Drummond.

There are 8500 British nationals in Qatar, at present, with an increase of 1000 people last year. Nearly 18,000 foreigners from Qatar apply for UK visas per year, and their number has been growing by 14 percent, he added.

The new facility, worth QR85mn is located between the Arch Roundabout and the InterContinental Roundabout, opposite to the new Doha Exhibition Center.

“The hi-tech design will meet out requirement for another 45 years, prioritizing in the areas of trade and investment, migration and consular services,” Drummond said.

The large building comprises meeting halls and special parking lots for public along with a new range of activities for the British community here.

The futuristic design of the building is done by taking environmental features into consideration, including use of grey water irrigation system, polished stone exterior, and solar panels to reduce sand and dust accumulation.

Drummond confirmed that the embassy is now open for business and an official opening is being planned by next month-end.

The Visa Application Center of the mission can be done in Sherif Building, opposite Toyota Towers. Foreigners seeking visa to the UK can complete the required formalities in this office, and the visa is issued within 24 hours for genuine applicants.
