Qatar sets deadline for nationalization drive
Within a year time, all public and private sector companies in Qatar will nationalize 20 percent of their workforce.
Sultan Hassan Al Dosari, the Civil Service Minister, announced that companies are given a deadline of 31st March 2009 to abide by the same.
According to Al Dosari, the move is to encourage nationals to take up jobs in private sector, as it is the responsibility of the Ministry to provide jobs to unemployed nationals, as it is leading to frustration among Qatari youth.
All expatriate employees in ‘non-specialist’ jobs at public sectors and ministries have been given a grace period, which ends on 31st March 2009.
“We already have a database of about 4500 Qatari job-seekers. This replacement plan, supported by the cabinet, would create about 3000 vacancies for unemployed Qataris. Qatarization of jobs is the top-most priority for the ministry. At present Qataris constitute only less than 10% of the workforce, which is unacceptable. We need to increase the participation of Qataris in the workforce,” Al Dosari said.
He continued to say that “So far only a few companies have met the target set by the government. But offlate, we have begun negotiations with the banking sector and other companies listed in the Doha Securities Market (DSM), and hotel industry has also been included in the list of sectors, which has to employ Qataris.”
Al Dosri also addressed the issue pertaining to wage differences in various government departments, and said that a Committee, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has already been formed to look into this issue.
Qatar has a population of about 1.5 million, made up of mostly foreign workers. Qatari government is already working to train young nationals to keep pace with the country’s thriving private sector.
