Doha well-prepared to host the Asian Cup
The Secretary-General of the Qatar Football Association, Saud al-Mohannadi, yesterday re-affirmed that everything is proceeding as planned, and that Doha is well-ahead of schedule, with the stadiums and the budget, and is all ready to host the Asian Cup next month.
He mentioned this, in response to the speculation that the state was considering withdrawal as a host of the 2011 Asian Cup. The Australian newspaper, ‘Sun Herald’ had claimed yesterday that Qatar who was the sole bidder for the 2011 Asian Cup, was having second thoughts about hosting the tournament, and called an urgent meeting with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to discuss this issue. The newspaper had quoted that the Australian Soccer’s Chief Executive, Ben Buckley, exclaimed that it was an ‘exciting opportunity’ was Australia to step in as host.
However, al-Mohannadi re-iterated that the meeting with AFC was only a scheduled meeting to discuss the preparations, and added that the State was keen to host the Asian Cup and make it most successful, which would further strengthen Qatar’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics.
