Qatar to house first major Green Building Complex
With the completion of the first phase of the Energy City Qatar (ECQ), Qatar will be the proud owner of the first major Green Building Complex in the region. This multi-billion dollar project will be ready by 2012.
Covering 72 hectares of land in Lusail, the buildings spread across the 92 plots of ECQ, will be powered with alternative sources of power, such as the solar and wind energy. The project is being developed with strict adherence to the Green Building norms, agrees the CEO of ECQ, Hisham Al Emadi.
The work is progressing as per the norms set up by international certification bodies in the case of an ideal Green Building project, which include, effective utilization of natural resources, proper venting of harmful gases such as the carbon monoxide, enhancing thermal efficiency of the structures, minimal use of carpet in utility rooms, proper insulation and venting done by using structural insulated panels for roof, floors and walls.
The cost of construction involved in the new method, is expected to exceed 5 to 7 percent than the normal cost said Al Emadi.
He further said that ECQ plans to reduce carbon emissions to a great extent, and to reduce the power consumption to 20 to 30 percent as against the normal construction. The ECQ buildings will be eco-friendly and will be built by use of energy saving materials. With mounting reports on global warming and ozone depletion, ECQ takes initiative to adopt green cities and building.
Al Emadi revealed that ECQ is now working towards obtaining the LEED rating (US Green Building Council) by 2011, as it is the first energy city in the world to get this prestigious rating. ECQ has also appointed a consultancy to ensure that the international norms are strictly abided throughout the project works. The cost of the project too has been revised from $2.6bn to $3.5bn.
ECQ will provide business accommodation in its world-class offices for 20,000 people and will offer luxury residences to 10,000 people. The Green City will be home for global players in the Middle East, in the hydrocarbon value chain, which includes national and international energy leaders.
