Work teams formed for commencing work on Smart ID Cards for nationals
The Nationality and Travel Documents department at the Ministry of Interior has formed two mobile work teams for collection of biometric data to issue Smart ID Cards to Qataris.
According to the Director of the department, Lt Col Abdullah Saad al-Buainain, the groups have been formed as per the directives by Minister of State for Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.
An official at the department said, “We are scanning the retina of the eye, and the prints of left and right index fingers, for the card, which will have an electronically read photo and signature.”
One group is currently working at Qtel’s main building, and will be there for two weeks, while the second will do a fifteen days assignment at Qatar National Olympic Committee headquarters after two weeks. Thereafter, the groups will move to various headquarters of organizations, companies and establishments.
The new Smart ID Card serves as a multi-purpose card and can be used for various purposes, such as issuance, renewal or cancellation of residence permit, transferring residence permit, re-activation of residence permit, separation of dependants from the passport, issuance of residence permit to new born babies, sponsorship transfer, exit permit, and issuance of visa in case of prior permission.
Apart from the said, the card can also be used for payment of traffic fines, renewal of driving license, and issuance of new license in case of a damaged or lost driving license. It can also be used at e-gates of airports or to commute between GCC countries.
