Inline with the initiatives launched by Urban Planning Development Authority (UPDA) to develop Al Wakra as a model city, the heritage structures in the city will undergo a facelift.
The new multi-billion dollar project emphasizes on the restoration of Wakra historic core, together with its traditional architecture, to retain a distinctive identity.
Taking the city’s rich heritage into consideration, a separate area will be developed as a heritage zone. As per the masterplan, the old forts in Wakra and its famous cultural museum will be restored. It also proposes to establish a state-of-the-art marine museum, which would replicate the marine life of Wakra’s past years. Wakra had a fleet of 150 pearl fishing boats during initial part of 20th century. The proposed marine museum will depict the pre-oil era of social life of Wakra.
The UPDA plans to create a special zone for upmarket commercial complexes, special zones for nationals, mixed residential areas for both nationals and residents, special zone for single residents, apart from special zones for public offices, educational institutions, marina and commercial complexes.
The new downtown regional center of Wakra, will be divided into various segments, which includes, Wakra South Square, Wakra Gateway, Wakra Festival Bay, Wakra Residence, Wakra Sands, Wakra Trade Center and Wakra College. The Wakra Gateway will be a special zone for major government and public offices.
The South Square will be a mix of residential apartments, office complexes, middle and small retail outlets.
The Festival Bay will be marked by business investment hotels, resort hotels, waterfront maritime museum, arts and cultural center and a marina. According to the masterplan, Wakra will be developed as a preferred waterfront destination, and a vibrant city which the people would love to visit or stay over.
