Qatar creates history with largest LNG Carrier in the world
The largest LNG Carrier in the world is now in Qatar. Her Highness, Sheikha Mozah Nasser al-Misnad, has named the first Q-Max liquefied natural gas carrier as Mozah, during a warm reception and glittering sideshow, held at Samsung Geoje Shipyard.
H H Sheikha Mozah, who was taken a tour to brief about the capabilities of the floating giant, was accompanied by the HE the Deputy Premier Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah.
Al-Attiyah, speaking on the occasion, commented that Qatar has created a history with this ship. Apart from being the largest and most advanced LNG carrier in the world, it also depicts Qatar’s ability to achieve the vision of becoming the largest LNG ship owner in the world.
The 266,000-cubic-meter vessel, known as Hulk 1675, until the naming ceremony yesterday, is due for delivery by mid-September. It will commence transportation of Qatargas LNG to the United Kingdom in October. The vessel has already successfully completed its sailing and gas carrying tests.
Mozah is the first wholly-owned LNG carrier in the Qatar Gas Transport Company. It is the 29th ship to be named in the fleet. Towards the third quarter of this year, 28 out of 29 LNG vessels will get operational and towards the third quarter of next year, all vessels will be completely operational.
Mozah measures the 345 meters in length and 58 meters at the beam. It is also the first out of 11 Q-Max ships to be built for Nakilat by Samsung Heavy Industries.
Q-Max, being larger than the conventional carriers is 80 percent larger, and includes number of firsts, such as slow speed diesel engines, onboard liquefaction units, twin propellers and rudders, cargo tanks and larger membranes, and the latest in hull anti-fuelling protection, apart from improved fire-protection systems.
Q-Max consumes 40 percent less energy and emissions per cargo-ton mile, as against conventional ships. Also Q-Max ships deliver LNG that costs less by 20%, than conventional carriers.
It has been confirmed that Qatar LNG fleet will be ready to transport LNG around the globe by 2010.
