Public Sector citizens choose part time businesses to supplement income
Most citizens working in the public sector are choosing additional business activities after regular working hours to manage the increasing cost of living.
An official source who spoke to the media, mentioned that about 39,000 individuals have been registered at the Municipal Affairs, with majority of these trade permits, belonging to public sector employees.
Commercial law does not prohibit government employees from running businesses, as along as it does not hinder them from performing their responsibilities and duties in their official job. However, the commercial registration office asks for a ‘no objection’ letter from the employer or clearance letter from the employer to begin a business.
Rashid Al Obeidly, a government employee, agreed that he has been involved in automobile business for ten years. Although it began as a part time activity, for generating additional income, the business flourished over time as Qatar boomed.
“Public Sector employees should not be curtailed from taking advantage of various business opportunities available in the country,” he said.
With mounting cost of living, people are seeking ways and means to supplement their fixed income.
