Qatar wins six prestigious awards for its satellite mapping system
The Center for Geographical Information System (CGIS) in Qatar has won six prestigious awards at an international conference, which just concluded.
The CGIS, a wing of Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA), has won the 28th annual ESRI International User Conference at San Diego, California, this month. ESRI is the world leader in GIS modeling and mapping software.
This first and most valuable award was conferred to Qatar in recognition of the maximum benefits of geographical information system functionality carried out by CGIS. The CGIS carried out the implementation of GIS among 44 government agencies in Qatar, which are integrated through high-speed network. The GIS applications that have been developed by the center is of immense benefit to the private, business, and government workers.
The Center aims to simplify data transfer between all agencies, minimize data redundancy, and ensure that suitably trained personnel are available to operate and manage the various components of the enterprise system.
The implementation of the enterprise-wide GIS in Qatar has resulted in cost savings due to greater efficiency, improved communication and better decision, better geographic information record keeping, and the opportunity to manage data geographically.
The Second award (Best overall map) was awarded to the center for developing the Qatar map, which provides nationwide data. More than 1200 entries from various parts of the world had competed in this segment. The map also won the “most unique” award for its high quality cartographic approach and style.
The CGIS “Qatar Landmarks Guide” won another award for its design in the category of Press Copy Map Series. The product was appreciated for its impressive approach of displaying landmarks on a satellite image background and providing photos and contacts of the important ones.
The popular “Electronic Place Finder’ software developed by the center, was awarded the second place, in the category of Desktop GIS applications.
“Explore Qatar”, another popular product by the CGIS, won the third place in the Web-based Applications category.
