First double-decker bus service to take-off in January 2009

Mowasalat is ready to launch its first double-decker bus service in Qatar by January 2009, which marks a part of its plan to expand its public transport network.

The Mowasalat Chairman and Managing Director, Jassim Saif Al-Sulaiti, revealed that they plan to have five to ten Karwa brand double-deckers on routes with high-demand. The buses will be made according to the specifications by Mowasalat.

The public transport company will also recruit and offer training to 1000 new drivers by the end of this year. About two hundred drivers are already undergoing training. The drivers are being trained in English, Urdu, Arabic and Tagalog so as to enable them to interact with customers effectively Al-Sulaiti said that Mowasalat currently has 185 buses on 37 routes, and it is all set for expansion by 27 percent increase in its public transport fleet. The company is replacing 400 cars from its taxi fleet, with new ones, and including an additional 300 buses between September 2008 and January 2009.

The first batch of taxis by Mowasalat hit the roads in September 2004, and most of these cars are still in service. Mowasalat also plans commissioning of a gas fuel station at the Abu Hamour premises of Mowasalat, after Ramadan to provide vehicles with LPG. About 50 cars running on LPG are likely to hit the streets once the gas fuel station opens, which is a positive step, taken to curb environmental pollution.

About 50 specially manufactured Karwa buses have been introduced for companies to transport labouers to and from their work sites. These state-of-the-art buses comprise all safety and luxury features, unlike the earlier transports for labourers.

Al-Sulaiti also pointed out that about 100 bus shelters have already been erected in and out of Doha, with 200 more on way. The bus shelters with “international design” are built with heat resistant glass and stainless steel.
