NHRC seeks revision of residency law
The National Housing Rights Committee (NHRC) disclosed that cases such as default payment of monthly installments, deportation, and sponsorship change are among top complaints received by the committee.
Speaking during a panel discussion on human rights, held at FEC Green Tent, on the occasion of the Holy month of Ramadan, Dr. Ali bin Sumeikh Al Meri, the NHRC General Secretary said that most complaints received by NHRC are one among the said cases. Qataris often have complaints about nationality, housing or unemployment.
The NHRC has requested revision of the law governing residency, and revealed that the committee has submitted its suggestions on sponsorship law, which is currently under discussion at the Advisory Council.
Speaking about free visas, Al Meri said that this new term arose due to visa trading in Qatar. The committee has suggested recommendations to concerned authorities to put an end to such trading and to limit such developments.
“In my opinion, the injustice practiced by sponsor or his employee may be the main reason for getting sponsorship change. The committee refers its reports on human right situation in Qatar to the cabinet regularly,” Al Meri added.
Qatar is planning to upgrade its values of human rights through education, to the United Nations Office in Geneva.
