Herbal medications and natural treatments catching up in Qatar
Now herbal medicine is the new rage in Qatar, with many herbal products seeing huge demand, due to its healing properties, reports The Peninsula.
Hence, several stores, specializing in herbal medicines have merged in the city markets, particularly, at Souq Waqif. This sudden high demand for herbal medicines is driven by the mounting costs of regular medines, and an urge among people to return to natural and organic remedies. The prices of herbal medicines at Souq Waqif begin with QR10 to QR30 per kilogram.
Few of the herbal medicines commonly found I the market are the silverweed, used in treating muscle stiffness and aids blood clotting. Black beans are another commonly used natural medicine, believed to treat a whole range of ailments. The herbal products in the local markets either originate from a single plant, or are mixtures prescribed for various conditions.
Practitioners of herbal medicine have now come into the mainstream. More recent researches have shown the value of herbal medicines in treatment and prevention of diseases. Although, traditionally, herbal medicines were available only in the form of powders or potions, now, they are available in various forms such as syrups, teas, liquid extracts, oils, dry extracts and tinctures.
With growing popularity of herbal medicines, the region has launched several satellite television channels to promote herbal treatments and offer instant diagnosis and remedies to viewers for their ailments.
A salesman and herbalist at Souq Waqif, Khalil Mohamed Al Qudsi, said “We see many visitors everyday, seeking treatments for various problems. For instance, I usually prescribe rock candy for sore throat, and Al Marqadoosh for stomach ailments.”
Al Qudsi also revealed that shops have been selling natural medications for diabetes, hypertension and sciatic nerve problems, among other diseases.
