Family Visa norms likely to be revised

The Labour Ministry plans to revise the salary limit for expatriates to sponsor their families, once the new set of regulations are put into place to regulate foreign workers recruitment.

According to the Ministry the increase in salary cap from QR4500 to QR7000 was made applicable as the house rents had increased considerably during the recent past.

The Recruitment Committee at the Ministry, which is busy putting in place a new set of recruitment procedures may review the salary limit in view of changing circumstances, said Dr. Sultan bin Hasan Al Dhabit Al Dosari, the Minister of Labour.

The members from the Ministry of Interior, General Secretariate of Development Plannng, Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Ministry of Business and Trade and those in the Labour Ministry are all part of the Committee.

The committee needs to seek the opinion of various government departments to frame the new recruitment guidelines, the Minister said. Defending the quota system for various nationalities, he said that it held the key to maintain demographic balance.

The Companies seeking workers of particular nationalities, whose requests for the same were refused by the Labour Ministry, could approach the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) for reviewing the decision. The Committee will co-ordinate with the Labour Ministry regarding such matters and recommend based on the importance of the issue.

As for the move by the Ministry to check the malpractice of visa sale by few companies, Al Dosari agreed that companies that make requests for large number of workers, but actually do not need large manpower, will be blacklisted after labour inspectors visit their premises for checks.

The Minister agreed that the recruitment process has not had an adverse impact due to global recession, and in fact, more foreign workers have been hired this year.
