Doha Expressway work resumes
Work has resumed on the Doha Expressway with three local contractors replacing one of the main contractor, Bilifinger Berger, who was disqualified after a legal battle with Ashghal, the Public Works Authority.
Engineers and workers of Boom Construction, Qatar Asphalt Company and Bin Omran Trading & Contracting Company have shifted to the site offices of the ambitious project, which came to a halt following a dispute with Ashghal.
According to an official at the site, one of the contractors agreed that they are given 10 months for completion of about 1200m of road, under one of the under-construction bridges, apart from access roads and points.
The project, which was suspended due to dispute, was divided into three parts by Ashghal, to make up for the lost time. One of the companies, Boom Construction, for instance, is responsible for part1 and part 2 of the project.
The Doha Expressway project is one of the major development programme of Ashghal, and aims to link the north of Doha with the south and the east with the west.
The 22 February Interchange (Packages 1 and 2), where work has now resumed, is also part of the Expressway project, apart from 12 other packages.
The Phases I and II of the project includes development of main highway from the immigration intersection to the Midmac intersection, including infrastructure, service roads and landscaping works and the construction of four main interchanges – Jowan, Sadd, Rayyan Street and Omar bin Khattab.
According to the original plan, the Omar bin Khattab Interchange is will intersect with Mecca Street, and the Doha Expressway will have a tunnel in the direction of Mecca Street with two lanes and shoulders in each direction.
The Rayyan Street Interchange is to have four levels, including the 800m long tunnel with three-lane dual carriageway, the Rayyan bridge with two-lane, and 800m dual carriageway towards New Rayyan Street and a link road with two lanes of 380m between 22 February Street and Rayyan Street.
The Sadd Interchange will see the reconstruction of 1200m long Sadd Street, which will intersect with the Doha Expressway, and construction of the Sadd Tunnel with a two-lane dual carriageway.
The Jowan Interchange includes re-construction of the 1km streth street to intersect with the Expressay, apart from a signaled intersection and the 700m three-lane dual carriageway.
Work on the 6km project was originally due for completion by second quarter of 2008.
