Qatar streets, public grounds, to be given official names

The Central Municipal Council in Qatar has revealed that all unnamed roads and avenues in Qatar, will soon be given official names, as per the recent Cabinet decision.

The decision was taken by the cabinet, by amending the previous decision, regarding christening of streets, parks, open public grounds and avenues across the country.

In accordance with the new decision, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, together with representatives from Supreme Education Council (SEC), Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Ashghal, the CMC, and the private sector, constituting a panel for naming process, will be chosen by the Ministry.

The panel, named “Street Naming Committee”, will function by finding apt names for streets and public spaces. Senior officials of various government agencies have been invited to propose names, which will have to be approved by the committee in case it finds the names ideal. The names should be suitable to Qatari culture and environment.

The Committee can also propose names for the unnamed streets and public spaces to the CMC, which would then refer the names to members of respective constituencies. The members can hold a public hearing too, if required, for arriving at a consensus when choosing the name.

With Qatar, undergoing tremendous urban development, several new streets have emerged in several parts of Doha, with several of them having no street names or numbers. Also, there are several public parks and avenues with no names, pointed out Jassem Al Maiki, Deputy Chairperson, CMC.

The unnamed streets and public places are actually causing problems in the daily life of local residents, and there is a dire need of street names and numbers when one has to deal with emergencies.
