Doha Expressway to be unveiled soon
The road leading to the ambitious QR15bn Doha Expressway will be unveiled on Thursday, thereby relieving the congestion in and around Doha.
The Doha Expressway project is a major development programme of Ashghal (Public Works Authority), aiming to link north of Doha with south, and east to the west. This intersection, a part of Phase One and Two of Doha Expressway, will offer direct link to Asiri Tunnel and Gharaffa Bridge.
The work on the stretch came to a halt in August 2009, when the Ashghal ran into a dispute with its main contractor. Work then resumed in November 2009 when Ashghal awarded the contract to three other companies.
The Phase I and Phase II of the project includes development of main highway from the immigration intersection to the Midmac intersection, including infrastructure and landscaping works, service roads and construction of four major interchanges at Omar bin Khattab, Rayyan Street, Sadd and Jowan.
The project is one of the most major roads in the current rapid development of infrastructure in Qatar. Work is underway to complete all service roads, giving better access to the expressway for motorists.
The opening portion will link Al Rayyan Road to Doha Expressway along a 700m stretch and includes two lanes in a single direction. Few service roads will also be partially accessible.
The Al Rayyan-Doha Expressway stretch will include four levels, with 800m length tunnel with a three-lane dual carriageway, Rayyan bridge with a two-lane 800m dual carriageway towards New Rayyan Street and a link road with two lanes of 380m between 22 February Street and Rayyan Street, and roundabouts serving three rotational motion in all directions, finally re-creating 1800m of Rayyan Road.
The Jowan Interchange includes re-construction of the street over 1km to intersect the expressway, in addition to signalled intersection and 700m three-lane dual carriageway.
