Qatar Airways Cargo plans major expansion

Qatar Airways has announced a third freighter that increases its cargo destinations to sixteen from the present nine.

During the first half of this year, Qatar Airways Cargo introduced its second freighter, as a part of long-term strategy to develop international network of cargo flights.

For the past six months, the freighter network has transformed radically with new destinations and a fresh-looking cargo warehouse at the Doha International Airport.

The new destinations now included are Milan, Istanbul, Karachi, Colombo, Algiers, Tunis and Johor Bahru. These are in addition to the already existing destinations in the network such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Dubai, Nairobi, Chennai, Bangalore, Dhaka, Lahore, and Khartoum.

"We have clearly planned to develop our passenger side of the business to major leisure and business destinations all over the world. Similarly, we are expanding our cargo operations to major markets around the world, with Doha, as our main hub. Over the next two years, we plan to increase our cargo operation, further with more A300 freighters and two Boeing 777 being introduced, that are likely to be delivered by 2009. "

The General Manager (Cargo) of Qatar Airways, John Batten, said that with the increase in aircraft and destinations, the airline is able to offer cargo agents and freight forwarders more choice of cities for their shipments. To keep in pace with the rapid expansion of Qatar Airways, the cargo department has also expanded its warehousing facilities. Qatar Airways Cargo also recently re-located its offices to the airport.
