Qatar ranked as most peaceful nation in MENA Region
Qatar emerged the topper in being the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during the 2010 Global Peace Index (GPI).
With this ranking, Qatar has been able to maintain its special status among Arab countries for the second consecutive year. Globally it is the 15th most peaceful country.
The index took into consideration about 149 countries, and based on this evaluation, Qatar scored 1,394, forging ahead of last year’s ranking when it was the 16th most peaceful nation in the world.
The GPI, as issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace, is composed of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from respective sources, which is a combination of internal and external affairs of countries.
The extent of crime in society, level of respect for human rights, political stability, spread of violence, internal conflicts, relationship with neighbouring countries, terrorist offences were all taken into account for ranking.
The indicators pertaining to the internal situation of the state, the GPI gave Qatar the best ranks. Qatar was ranked 30th globally during the first report in 2007, while it was ranked 33rd in 2008.
In the MENA region, Qatar was ahead of Oman, Tunisia, Kuwait, UAE and the Egypt. Internationally, New Zealand was ranked the most peaceful nation on Earth, followed by Iceland and Japan.
The GPI report emphasized that small, stable, and democratic countries are consistently ranked as the highest.
