Qatar makes successful transition to eight digit telephone numbers

The telecom regulator in Qatar, ictQATAR, has confirmed about the successful transition of phone numbers in Qatar from seven digits to eight digits, effective 28th July 2010.

The move aims to meet the growing demand for both fixed and mobile phone numbers in Qatar.

The Chief Technical Officer at ictQATAR’s Regulatory Authority, Saleh Al-Kuwari, said that due to the efforts by Qtel and Vodafone, the change to eight digit numbers happened smoothly, without much interruption of networks.

All fixed and mobile numbers beginning with 3,4,5,6 and 7 have been altered to begin with 33, 44, 55, 66 and 77 respectively. This also includes numbers used for fax services.

All emergency numbers in Qatar, including 112 and 999, remain unaltered.

During the next three months, people dialing the old seven digit numbers will receive an automated recorded voice message in English and Arabic asking to re-dial with correct eight digit number.

For any further queries, call customer service lines on 111. Vodafone customers calling from a different number other than their Vodafone mobile, can call 800 7111.
