Doha, the least expensive expat-friendly city in Gulf

Doha is the least expensive city in the Gulf region and worldwide for expatriates, according to latest report by Mercer, a leading global consultancy.

Doha ranks 167th on the international list and is amongst the most preferred expatriate destinations in the Gulf, based on the Cost of Living Survey 2011 by Mercer. The Survey included 200 cities and compared several basket groups including food, housing, transport and clothing.

Abu Dhabi was recorded as the most expensive in Middle Eastern Cities, ranking 67th in global listings, followed by Dubai at 81th position, Riyadh at 135th, Manama at 157th, Kuwait at 159th, Muscat at 184th and Jeddah at 185th positions.

The drop in accommodation costs is one of the prime reasons for Doha being considered as expat-friendly. The accommodation depreciation in Doha, coupled with stability and safety aspects have contributed to the low cost within the city.

The Angola capital, Luanda has been recorded as the world’s most expensive city to live in, for the second consecutive time this year. The other expensive cities as per the survey are Ndjamena (Chad), Moscow (Russia), Osaka (Japan), Geneva (Switzerland), and Zurich (Switzerland). New York is used as the base city in the Mercer Survey.
