The opening of QNCC, places Doha on the world map

The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) has been unveiled today, thereby putting Doha on the world map, as an international destination for events and conferences in the future.

According to Ali Nasser M N Al Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer ASTAD Project Management, construction of QNCC has helped in offering a place where the world’s best minds can come together.

Designed by the Japanese architect, Arata Isozaki, the QR4.2bn worth QNCC, spread across 40,000 sqm of space, is a world-class venue to host the world’s best research and knowledge-based exhibitions and conferences.

The work on the centre took five years for completion, and now offers flexible space options with meeting and conference rooms, with a capacity to host upto 10,000 people. The 3,500 square meters of solar panels help in meeting the energy consumption of the centre.

The centre already houses the art “Maman”, a 9 metre sculpture of a spider which has already fascinated the world by being exhibited at all contemporary art museums by Louise Bourgeois.

The QNCC’s full potential is already depicted by the fact that it will be hosting the 20th World Petroleum Congress this week, and will also put on stage on 16th December 2011, the play Richard III by William Shakespeare, starring Kevin Spacey.

Qatar is aiming for diversification from oil and gas based economy to a knowledge based one, and therefore, a place like QNCC was just what was needed to develop the country’s potential, said Mohamad Bahig, the QNCC Sales Manager.
