Qatari women reluctant to join nursing due to low wage and job nature

Most Qatari women are not willing to join the nursing profession, due to comparatively low salaries and special nature of the job, says Dr Nabila Al Meer, Executive Director, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). At present, there are 5000 nurses in HMC, and only six percent among them are nationals, revealed Nabila.

“Nursing is a different kind of profession, which demands full-time commitment and dedication. Most Qatari women do not find this profession attractive as there are several other opportunities to lure them. However, last year, the University of Calgary-Qatar, helped in meeting the shortage of nurses in the country to a certain extent, by drawing more Qatari women to this profession. This university is the ‘only’ institution in Qatar that offers a degree program in nursing,” said Nabila.

Nabila revealed that recent revision in salaries and work-schedule for nurses, introduced by HMC, has helped in improving the situation. HMC has introduced a new shift system, reducing total number of weekly working hours from 48 to 40, with all the nurses gaining a two day-off instead of one day.

She added that the demand for nurses in Qatar will continue with increase in establishment of new hospitals in the country. Currently, the Human Resource Department at HMC is sketching out a five year plan to meet the requirement for various health professionals and nurses.

HMC is also seeking the prestigious Nursing Magnet Status award for its Nursing department from the American Nurses Credential Center, revealed Nabila.
