Employees in Qatar dissatisfied over salary levels

Employees in Qatar have expressed a feeling of dissatisfaction over their salary levels, with most of them opting to leave the country, unable to cope with the inflationary pressure, reports The Peninsula.

The Salary Survey 2008 conducted by ArabianBusiness.com, had sought opinions from 7809 respondents in the GCC.

In the survey, 37.37 percent felt that they earned a bit lesser than the industry average for their position, while 25.54 said they earned much less, and only 1 percent say that they earn a lot more.

About 33 percent of US citizens and 28.57 percent of UK citizens were drawing more than $100,000 a year, in comparison to 17.64 percent of Qataris, the survey revealed.

15.05 percent of people said the salary increase drawn was in the range of 11 to 15 percent, while 9.68 percent said that they received 16 to 20 percent hikes and 32.97 percent said the increase was less than five percent.

22.04 percent expressed job dissatisfaction due to unsatisfactory pay and stated that they would remain in their present jobs for two years, while 33.87 percent said they would pull on with their current jobs for two to five years, and 18.55 percent said they would stay for less than a year. But most of them, a staggering 65.59 percent said they would leave their jobs this year itself. As for the reason behind quitting the jobs, 35.11 percent pointed out the increase in cost of living as a major factor, followed by lack of pay-hikes (19.08 percent), job dissatisfaction (14.12 percent), other opportunities (13.74), lack of recognition (11.07 percent) and poor company performance (6 percent).

Oil and gas was rated as the best-paying sector, followed by IT, construction, and banking. The survey showed that employers throughout the GCC appear tight-fisted when it comes to offering pay-hike. All around the region, 32.97 received pay-hike of less than five percent, while only 7.25 percent of employers offered an increase of more than 30 percent.
