Qataris prefer men in top official positions

Most Qataris prefer men in top positions in leading private and public sector jobs, reveals a survey report, conducted by a Qatari researcher from the social science department of Qatar University.

The survey, being the first of its kind in the country, was conducted in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. The survey, conducted by Dr. Kultham Ali Al Ghanim, the Qatari researcher, covered about 1000 Qatari men and women.

The survey revealed that 42.7 percent respondents were not convinced about appointing women at top positions, while 32.7 percent said they could handle such positions, while 24.6 percent do not agree with the idea.

The survey was conducted by distributing a questionnaire among 1200 Qataris in the 20 to 35 age group, out of which, about 1015 responded to the survey. The survey documented opinions of senior officials from 23 public and private sectors and institutions and 16 women leaders.

Among those who supported to the idea of women taking up top positions, 43.3 percent were females and 19.9 percent were males. A majority of 40.0 percent were of the opinion that women should stay at home, while 22.2 percent said that such positions were meant for men. However, only 7 percent said that women were not qualified for such jobs.

When questioned about ‘who will be the best boss’, 68.3 percent answered ‘men’, while only 6.1 percent favoured women, and 25.7 percent did not find any difference between men and women in this regard.

Most men were of the opinion that deep-rooted social perceptions and traditions prevent them from giving women an equal status. The study also revealed that there is hardly any presence or minimal presence of women in top position in media, telecommunications, politics or security.

However, women are making their presence in managing business establishments, states the survey, pointing out to the Qatari Business Women Forum, which comprises more than 500 members.
