Non-Qatari old-time employees in unspecialized state jobs likely to be replaced
Non-Qatari government employees, who have been holding clerical and administrative positions for long-time now, may soon have to face a harsh realty. These jobs are likely to be given off to young and education nationals, and better qualified foreign workforce, reports The Peninsula.
They have immensely benefited from their jobs, and it is time that they moved on and gave the opportunity to young citizens as well as foreigners,- says a spokesman from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, about old-timers in unspecialized state jobs.
When speaking to ‘The Peninsula’, he admitted that old-time resident employees in the government sector too, are indeed a target for the job nationalization drive. However, the vacant positions may not necessarily be filled up by unemployed nationals alone.
“It would be better to bring over young and educated foreigners to work in these positions as well,” he said.
Some government departments and ministries are expected to begin retrenching non-Qatari employees, particularly in the clerical and administrative positions, beginning May 1st, and others may follow suit in July.
A few ministries and state agencies have already informed their senior non-Qatari staff in clerical and administrative sections to be ready to leave by next March.
“This puts the total numbers of unemployed citizens at 3,000. But, the current focus of the job nationalization drive is the private sector,” said the spokesperson.
The private companies were earlier reluctant to absorb many citizens on their rolls, but now they are reacting in a positive manner, after the Ministry advised them to set aside 20 percent jobs for citizens.
According to the official, Banks have taken the lead in offering jobs to nationals. The official clarified that Qatarization does not mean removing residents from jobs. Citizens will not be a substitute for foreign workforce due to demographic aspects alone, and in fact the foreign workers would be required for next 25 years minimum.
