Qatar to hire 30,000 skilled workers from Pakistan

Qatar has announced plans to hire about 30,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers from Pakistan during the current year.

An additional protocol to this effect has been signed from both ends pertaining to the current labor agreement that linked both countries in 1987. The 1987 labor agreement was meant to regulate the export of manpower to Qatar.

The agreement provides an opportunity for accommodation of more people in Qatar, and also in rehabilitating the Pakistanis whose contracts expire subsequently. The agreement is also bound to help workers who irrespective of the expiry of their contracts will be able to avail full benefits in terms of social security, ages or other emoluments, being their legal dues.

The additional protocol will be a step forward ensuring additional employment opportunities in Qatar, and will be reviewed through a joint committee to facilitate Pakistanis workers.

According to the Minister for Labour and Manpower, Kursheed Shah, about 75000 Pakistanis are already working in Qatar, and another 30,000 workers would be sent to Qatar in 2008.

“Qatar is demanding skilled manpower, but we are facing a shortage of trained workers due to discontinuation of policies during the past couple of years. The government is making plans to establish more vocational institutes in the country to train workers to meet international labour markets. The government also plans to curb child labor through education and financial aid,” Shah added.
