Bahrainis reluctant to accept jobs in Qatar due to high rents and costs
Mounting rent rates, coupled with high living costs, have turned out to be a major hindrance in the government efforts to find suitable jobs for Bahrainis in other Gulf Countries.
The employment office in Qatar, has however, been successful in finding ideal jobs for several skilled Bahrainis. But, majority of them have rejected the offers, as they feel that it will be unable for them to cope with the high rentals, which will eat into their salaries.
The Directorate of Public and International Relations in Bahrain, Subah Al Dossari, speaking to the media, mentioned that recruitment of Bahrainis would become more popular, once the Bahrain-Qatar Causeway is inaugurated.
Although things were proceeding smoothly, with the Qatari government expressing enthusiasm over the employment of Bahrainis in Qatar, and treating them on par with citizens, but majority of Bahrainis are hesitant to go, due to the high cost of living, he added.
Qatar opened the first employment office for Bahraini job applicants, targeting more employment options for citizens. Bahrainis will not feel out of place, as there are no cultural clashes, and they can go home whenever they wish. The opening of office does not imply that Bahrain does not offer job prospective to its citizens, but this service, is a part of the government’s strategy to expand opportunities for Bahrainis, he said.
The office will not affect the operations of National Employment Programme in any manner, as applicants who wouldn’t want to leave their Kingdom, can still be offered with good opportunities in Bahrain, he added.
As per the statistics by the Labour Ministry, the 16.5 percent of unemployment which prevailed four years ago, has been reduced to 2 percent in 2008. This success has been attributed to the National Employment Project, which also helped the ministry’s campaign to upgrade the skills and salaries of Bahrainis.
Majority of the companies have already revised their minimum pay to Bahraini workers to BD200, which is further likely to rise to BD250 in 2009.
