Qatar plans new Law to facilitate recruitment process

Qatar is planning introduction of a new law that would permit employees to switch-over jobs.

The government is considering such a decision due to the negative references in the annual Trafficking of the US State Department published in Persons Report, as said by the US Ambassador Chase Untermeyer.

The report was based on the expatriate workers condition. Untermeyer said the report was handed over to the Qatar Foreign Ministry before its actual release in Washington.

The government is considering extending the protection of Labour Laws to domestic workers.

The report criticized the recruitment process in Qatar, and said the labourers from Asian countries were forced to pay money to obtain work permits. This throws light to "difficult and dangerous living conditions" wherein, there have been instances of more number of individuals having to live crammed in single rooms. The report also quoted workers complaints stating that on arrival in Qatar, they were paid less than promised, and were compelled to carry on with other jobs than the post for which they were hired.

Qatar was placed in the bottom Tier 3 groups in the report -wherein the governments did not show the commitment to meet international standards.
