More Qatari nationals in public administration jobs

About more than half economically active Qatari nationals are handling public administration jobs while only a few are employed in sectors that require technical skills or qualifications.

According to figures released by the Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) for October 2009, about 36,000 of the Qatari workforce have been engaged in public administration.


The other sectors that employ majority of nationals were education, health and social work. The construction sector remained the topmost employer with 560,000 strong workforce comprising 44percent of the 1.26mn economically active population in the country. The construction sector has been dominated by single expatriate workforce, the survey reveals.


The figures by QSA also show that Qatari women professionals surpass their male counterparts in the Qatar job market and in university qualifications. Women professionals marked a total of 12,492 in the Qatari community during October 2009, while the male professionals totalled to only 6,220 during the same period, which is just half the number of their women counterparts. Majority of the women professionals worked in health and education sectors.


While more than half of the total number of Qatari women had university qualifications (14,000 out of 25,500), while out of the total number of economically active men (45,000), only 10,550 had been to the university.
