Qatar issues new and tough construction specifications
A new set of construction specifications has been issued in Qatar, and it will get effective three months after publication in the official gazette.
The Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS) 2014 were issued by the Minister of Environment, Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi, part of which concerns the safety of workers engaged on construction sites.
This is the fifth version of construction specification launched last October.
About 120 experts on nine committees and seven teams have worked for years to prepare QCS 2014. They comprise 311 articles in 29 chapters and involve building designs and other matters, the report said.
The new stipulation mandates that all buildings being built should be seismic and wind-proof, should have entry and exit points for people with special needs, and the walls should provide sufficient sound and heat insulation.
The specifications also take into consideration the age of building, quality of construction materials, including steel and other ready-mix.
Further, the decree states that construction debris should be recycled, all dysfunctional street lights should be replaced and energy-efficient bulbs need to be used, the report said.
The QCS has one chapter dedicated to railways, and another on the quality of materials and construction. Mandatory standards will be developed for green buildings too, it said.
