Contract awarded for building the Qatar World Cup Stadium
Leading UK-based architecture firm, Foster and Partners, has bagged the contract to build the Qatar stadium that would host the final of FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Stadium, with a seating capacity of 80,000, will be built in the Lusail City, located 15kms north of Doha.
The Secretary-General of Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Hassan Al Thawadi, was quoted as saying that the committee is eager to begin working with Foster and Partners in creating the iconic contemporary stadium, inspired by Qatari culture.
The Lusail Stadium will be the centrepiece of the tournament, an architecturally innovative stadium that maintains the sporting functionality and delivers sustainability commitments. The stadium at Lusail is likely to host the first game of the tournament and the opening ceremony, the report said.
The stadium will be the showpiece of massive $45billion construction project for a new city being built in-time for the World Cup, the report said. Foster and Partners already holds credit for their re-development works at Reichstag Building in Berlin, the Hearst Tower in New York and the Wembley Stadium in London.
