Switch-off for a Greener Qatar

The Qatar Today Green Awards, together with Qatar Foundation has requested residents in Qatar to turn off their lights for an hour between 8pm and 9pm on 29th March 2008.

The request follows the presentation of QT Green Awards by HSBC, together with WWFs (World Wildlife Fund) Earth Hour initiative, as a part of its commitment towards a greener Qatar, an official revealed.

Quite a few institutions and businesses have already confirmed their support to the Earth Hour Programme and agreed to switch off the lights during the designated hour.

The Earth Hour originated in Sydney in 2007, as a local initiative, wherein more than two million people and 2100 businesses tuned into the Sydney Earth Hour and reduced the energy consumption of the city, by a staggering 10.2% during one hour.

This year more than 11000 businesses and 171000 people and major cities have pledged their support to Earth Hour.
