Rental dispute poses health hazard to tenants
Following an ongoing rent dispute, the landlord of few residential and commercial properties in Doha, is said to have denied even the basic cleaning and maintenance services to his tenants.
The dispute began when the owner attempted to increase rents for his properties, clearly in violation of the current rent law. When the tenants refused to pay the increased rents, the owner of seven buildings, constituting 32 commercial offices, and number of housing units, refused to give up. He brought an eviction order for demolishing the property.
The tenants contacted the concerned authority to confirm the authenticity of the eviction order, and to their relief discovered that the authority had no plans to demolish the complex, as the buildings were comparatively new.
Thereafter, the landlord stopped providing the basic cleaning and maintenance work on the building, against what was earlier stipulated in the rental contract singed by the parties. The premises slowly deteriorated into a mess, with garbage scattered everywhere in the complex, and sewage water leaking from the buildings, turning it into a breeding ground for pests, thereby posing health hazard to residents of the complex.
One of the residents of the complex said that tenants have been surviving in these conditions for the past eight months now. It has been learnt that all tenants of the building are regularly paying rent through a lawyer, who has presented the case in a court, which is currently hearing the dispute.
