High rents compel Doha families to live in trailers
With the high costs of accommodation in Doha, the low-income families are being compelled to live in trailers on the outskirts of the city.
This practice, although unheard of about until a couple of years back, is now catching up, as the rents continue to soar. Increasing numbers of bachelors and families are choosing to live in mobile homes.
The landowners are renting out vacant plots for about QR1000 per month, and trailers are costing about QR15000 to QR20000. Those with trailers are said to be renting out space in the mobile home for others for an amount of QR1000 each. The cost of single room accommodation in industrial areas has touched about QR3500 per month.
Living in a trailer is actually illegal in Qatar. Rents in Qatar have risen 5 percent annually, with the first quarter of this year surging by 27 percent more than that of the fourth quarter of 2007, reveal official data. Further, the inflation in Qatar during third quarter in March was recorded as 14.75 percent.
