Land owners should produce original tenancy agreement before renting
The owners renting out their properties are now required to produce their original tenancy agreements at the rent registration office, operated by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
The Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning HE Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Khalifa Al Thani, has passed a ministerial decision, amending the Article 5 of an earlier decision, regulating the functioning of the rent registration offices.
According to the amended article, the property owners or their legal representatives are required to produce their original IDs or passports and also original rent agreements signed with tenants during the time of registering a rent contract.
If possible, copies of IDs or passports of their tenants should be attached with the registration form, but, this is not a mandatory provision.
The landlords will however, be permitted to register rental contracts even if they fail to produce original rent contracts, but the authenticity of the documents would be entirely theirs.
The Municipal Affairs Ministry would not bear any responsibility if the contract is not in order, as per the amended regulation.
The landlords can fill in a registration form and deposit the fee and submit the completed form with enclosures to the officials concerned at the rent registration centers. The copies would be retained by the centers, after verifying their authenticity.
