Barwa, Qatari Diar to establish research institute
Barwa and Qatari Diar, two leading property companies in Qatar, are planning to soon establish a research institute, in the heart of Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), following recent approval of their application by QSTP.
The Barwa and Qatari Diar will focus on studies about sustainability and its applications, aiming to meet the environmental challenges and educate the construction sector.
The Chairman and Managing Director of Barwa Knowledge, Dr. Yousef Al Horr, said that the proposed QSTP-based Barwa and Qatari Diar Research Institute will develop new knowledge through research and development in urban construction.
The institute will consider the possibility of introducing alternative materials that are environment-friendly for construction, said Eng. Mohammed bin Ali Al Hedfa, Deputy CEO – Business Development, Qatari Diar and CEO of Lusail. He emphasized that the companies aimed to contribute their bit to the society, by making life better for people with their upcoming projects.
The institute intends to focus on two main activities – green building systems and practices and addressing environmental challenges facing Barwa and Diar projects.
While the sustainable or green building design focuses on increasing the efficiency of resources such as better use of water, energy and materials, it will also reduce the building impacts on human health and environment with better design, operation, construction and maintenance.
Dumping of waste cannot continue, as the company is focusing on solid waste management, and is finding means to make use of excess water left after treatment, Dr. Al Horr said.
Apart from QSTP, the project will be strongly supported by Qatar National Research Fund, and academic institutions and research centers belonging to international firms.
Dr. Al Horr said that this research institute strives to become a model for other companies to establish research centers, and will serve not only Barwa, Diar or Qatar, but the entire world.
