Doha Zoo

Of the many delightful and fun-filled things to see in Qatar, the Doha zoo is one of the most exciting, most family-friendly places to visit. Situated about a 30 minute drive from the city centre, Doha Zoo represented a miniature animal kingdom and offered a great opportunity to see some of the more traditional zoo animals and region’s desert creatures. However, the sad news is the 30-year-old zoo would remain closed for months, but recent report reveals about a large-scale renovation as it is converted into a safari park.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has issued a report that the zoo’s animals have been moved to a new temporary home in Rawdat Al Faras farm while the work is being carried out. The overhaul which apparently could cost up to $55 million –will cover 75 hectares, seven times the size of the current facility which has been closed for development work almost a year and a half ago. The new zoo will be divided into several regions signifying the natural and climatic features of three continents.

The rare species including the Oryx which is currently an endangered species was also housed in the zoo. Doha Zoo is the only venue where visitors can view Oryx in captivity other than the Oryx Farm in in the Al Shahaniya region of central Qatar. To visit the Oryx Farm, Visitors need a special permit from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture however it is easier to go through a tour operator. The Oryx is a stunning member of the antelope family with large, remarkable, straight horns. The onyxes were once on the brink of extermination; hence the breeding programme was started by the Qatari government at the Oryx Farm. The Oryx is the country's national animal and the mascot of both Qatar Airways, its national airline and of the Asian Games when they were held in Qatar.
