Qatar Museums (QM) will present an array of exhibitions in spring 2020 at four of its institutions in the nation's capital, offering residents and visitors’ exceptional opportunities to enjoy artworks and artifacts that span centuries and the globe.
These fascinating and remarkably diverse new exhibitions perfectly express the mission of Qatar Museums to serve the people of the nation while reaching out to the public everywhere. They strive to increase appreciation of the deep and varied artistic heritage of Qatar and its region, and at the same time provide opportunities to engage with manifold forms of contemporary culture here and around the world.
This is the first museum exhibition of Lebanese artist Huguette Caland’s work in Qatar and celebrates an artist defined by her uncompromising perspective on art and life. Over a career of nearly fifty years, Huguette Caland has made paintings, drawings, sculptures and textiles that reflect a life lived outside of convention.
This exhibition is an overview of four decades of the joyously sensuous paintings, drawings, sculptures, and clothing designs of Caland (1931-2019), including a selection of never-before exhibited drawings and the artist’s first caftan.
The exhibition also focuses on Caland’s early works made in Beirut as well as paintings, drawings and textiles produced while she was living in Paris from 1970–87. This period is marked by exuberant and erotically-charged paintings that challenged conventions around beauty and desire.
