QR6 bn contracts signed for eco-friendly transportation

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani on Monday witnessed the signing of a slew of contracts worth QR6 billion to create world-class infrastructure for eco-friendly transportation system in Qatar.

The contracts were signed by the Free Zones Authority, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Karwa Transportation Company, Chinese companies Yutong and Higer and a number of private sector companies working in the field of contracting and construction.

Infrastructure such as stations, warehouses and parking lot will be established under the contract. The PM witnessed the signing of contracts to purchase buses for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as the services to operate them and their facilities, and the contract to establish an electric bus assembly plant, in addition to signing 11 contracts for the bus infrastructure that support the private sector.

Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim bin Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti said these contracts will ensure that almost 30 percent of public transport vehicles in Qatar are electric before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Signing of these contracts comes within the framework of implementing the Electric Vehicle Strategy that the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) developed as a key part of Qatar’s public transportation plan 2030.

“Our aim is to completely transform to an environment-friendly transport system by 2030,” he added.
